e‑Handoff is an online system that helps doctors, nurses and other clinical workers transfer responsibility for a patient’s care from one provider to another, normally during shift change. This transfer is known as a ‘handoff’ and is prone to communication errors. Handoffs are the weak link in healthcare. CRICO, a large medical malpractice insurer, recently estimated that over 30% of malpractice claims involved faulty communication. e‑Handoff reduces communication errors and helps save patients’ lives, plus reduces hospitals’ malpractice costs.

Their cloud-based, HIPAA-compliant system guides providers into using best communication practices (e.g. I-PASS or SBAR) during handoffs, and allows them to quickly customize handoffs to their particular workflow, without assistance from their IT department.

e‑Handoff pulls in data from EMR systems such as Epic, Cerner and Meditech to save providers from redundant data entry. e-Handoff also helps hospitals capture E&M billing charges that are not caught by their EMR, thereby adding to their revenue cycle.

A structured handoff system is required for accreditation by both The Joint Commission and the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).
