Sonera Magnetics is developing novel magnetometers to enable low-cost, portable medical diagnostic tools. Information about brain activity is critical to the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of neurological disorders including epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, and Alzheimer’s disease. The most powerful non-invasive imaging technique for brain activity, magnetoencephalograpy, uses machines the size of an MRI, which require liquid helium and magnetic shielding in order to operate. These systems cost upwards of $3 million, with annual operating costs of $250k. Unlike other technologies, Sonera’s sensors can operate at room temperature and in ambient environmental conditions, removing the need for magnetic shielding and cryogenic equipment. This enables a small, portable MEG system that is a fraction of the cost of our competitors.
